Multirate Signal Processing

Stub. Downsampling and decimation, upsampling and interpolation, and the general framework of multirate signal processing that combines them.

Changes a discrete-time signal’s effective sample rate without going back through the continuous-time domain: downsampling/decimation reduces the rate (discarding samples, after lowpass filtering to avoid aliasing at the new, coarser rate), and upsampling/interpolation increases it (inserting zeros, then lowpass filtering to interpolate the missing samples). Combined (e.g. rational-factor rate conversion), these form the multirate toolkit used whenever two parts of a system run at different sample rates.

Outline (TODO — flesh out each)

  • Downsampling and decimation
  • Upsampling and interpolation
  • Multirate signal processing — rational sample-rate conversion
