Signals and Systems Basics

Stub. Continuous-time vs. discrete-time signals, a review of complex numbers, discrete-time systems, and linear time-invariant (LTI) systems.

The vocabulary the rest of the course is built on: what distinguishes a continuous-time signal from a discrete-time one (a function of a real variable vs. a sequence), the complex-exponential toolkit needed to talk about frequency at all, and the classification of discrete-time systems by the properties that make them tractable — linearity and time-invariance (LTI), which together guarantee a system is fully characterized by its response to a single impulse.

Outline (TODO — flesh out each)

  • Continuous-time (CT) and discrete-time (DT) signals
  • Review of complex numbers — phasors, Euler’s formula
  • Discrete-time systems — memory, causality, stability, invertibility
  • Linear and time-invariant (LTI) systems
