Internet Fundamentals for IoT
Stub. How the Internet works and how many hosts communicate; protocols and protocol stacks; network addressing and addressing layers; IoT-specific protocols; intra-domain vs. inter-domain routing; L2 vs. L3 forwarding; network virtualization; and delivery/multicast methods.
The networking review IoT is built on top of: the Internet is not a new invention but decades-old protocols, addressing schemes, and architectures repurposed at a much larger and more constrained scale. Covers the protocol-stack model, the addressing hierarchy (and why IoT protocols layer differently), the intra-domain/inter-domain distinction (with a real backbone as a worked example), the L2-vs-L3 forwarding split, network virtualization, and the different ways a network can deliver a packet — unicast, multicast, and the approaches to implementing multicast.
Outline (TODO — flesh out each)
- How the Internet works; how many hosts communicate
- What is a protocol? Protocol stacks
- Network addressing and addressing layers
- IoT protocols — how they fit into the stack
- Intra-domain vs. inter-domain routing (worked example: a backbone network)
- Layer 2 vs. Layer 3 forwarding
- Network virtualization
- Delivery methods and multicast approaches
